Separation/Orientation Process
Preschool is the first time most children have a relationship with a teacher as opposed to a caregiver. Therefore, we view the child/teacher relationship as the core of each child's experience at JDN. Because the first connection with a teacher can be the model for future relationships with teachers, we want children to know that a teacher can be a reliable, trusted guide who can help them experience the pleasure of mastering of new things.

Because we know that it takes time to establish a truly trusting relationship, our classes are small. Children stay with the same teacher for most of each school day so that they can experience all parts of our curriculum guided by a teacher they trust. Once this relationship has been established, we allow it to deepen by keeping children with the same teacher for the two years of preschool. Your children will grow with consistent support as they learn to master increasingly challenging tasks.

JDN's curriculum philosophy is based on the concept of mastery-teaching. Children learn that new concepts are not overwhelming if they are broken down into small steps that can be mastered in sequence. When these steps are discussed and processed, children feel the self-esteem of mastering something new, and at the same time, they begin to grasp how to effectively approach every new subject. This provides a model for future learning.

We apply this mastery concept to all aspects of JDN – from starting school to learning letters. We also employ a series of steps to help the child begin to form a trusting relationship with the teacher. Before starting school, the child's teacher will contact you about bringing your child for a classroom visit at a time when you can stay and make the initial introduction.

We prepare an orientation schedule to help each child master the process of feeling comfortable with a new teacher and adapting to school. The child will need a parent or a trusted substitute to help with this transition. The typical orientation schedule takes place the first week of school.

This orientation schedule allows the child to adjust to school in small steps and provides a prototype for future learning experiences. It also gives parents an opportunity to get to know the child's teacher and to familiarize themselves with the school routine. This is a good springboard for future communication between home and school. If more time is needed to acclimate the child to school, an individualized schedule can be arranged to fit your family's needs.
