JDN Jewish Pogram

JDN is a Jewish school, but not a religious school. By this we mean that at JDN, children are taught Jewish holidays and traditions but, most important, Jewish values. Because we serve a diverse population, we leave religious instruction to the parents. To show respect and appreciation for all the diverse cultures of our school population, we encourage children to share their families' special traditions.

The teacher shows interest in the activities and happenings that take place in all of the children's homes, and although the curriculum focuses on the Jewish experience, those things that are of value to the family of each child are valued by the teacher. Her interest in and respect for each child's experiences set the tone for the learning that ensues as she displays her sensitivity to the needs of the child who is of another religion or who is from a non-observant Jewish family. In planning for our curriculum, we present Jewish traditions in song, stories, and art projects. We believe that young children learn best when they are actively involved in the process, when what they are doing is relevant to their lives, and when they are stimulated, curious, and interested. To experience Jewish values, the young child needs to participate in many different kinds of experiences. Activities are introduced according to the child's level of development and understanding. Discussions that deal with justice, forgiveness, caring, freedom, love, and sharing are important basics in the Jewish program at the early childhood level.

We have scaled down the Old Testament stories on which the holidays focus, so that they are age-appropriate for preschool and kindergarten children. We are aware that children may hear a more complete version at home or in temple. Our modified versions familiarize children with key figures and encapsulate traditions, messages, and values.

To support the Jewish family, we involve parents in activities whenever possible. Lesson plans include explanations of holiday activities. In this way, parents can be aware of and sensitive to their child's response. Classes may have a Succot party to celebrate the harvest, and parents come to decorate the succah, a small harvest hut. They enjoy time spent with other classmates and families, sharing traditional foods, and singing holiday songs. We have a model Seder for Passover, and often a parent or two will offer to help make that day more special.

Each Friday, in all of the classrooms, children celebrate the Jewish Sabbath through holding a model Shabbat. They say the Hebrew blessings, light the candles, and enjoy grape juice and delicious Challah, traditional egg bread.

In short, JDN offers a living experience of Judaism through daily activities, Shabbat celebrations, and Jewish holiday observances and by keeping a kosher kitchen and modeling Jewish values.
