Monarch Timeline
2000: Monarch School established.
2002: Partnership with “Boston Team” initiated.
2004: Monarch Model launched.
2005: Monarch School awarded a $500,000 U.S. Department of Education grant to develop a visual language program.

Experienced software and technology development professional from the health care industry hired to lead the initiative.

2006: Construction of the new, state-of-the-art home for Monarch School completed.
Bellefaire signs a licensing agreement with Children’s Hospital Boston to develop
Visual Language Learning Solution (VLLS) technology.

Focus groups composed of teachers, therapists, administrators and parents convened to
determine needs and solicit input.

A highly talented and experienced team of researchers, clinicians, teachers, technology
and design experts assembled to develop the VLLS.

Spring 2007: VLLS will be alpha-tested at Monarch School where it will be rigorously and continuously evaluated and refined. Evaluation criteria will include, but not be limited to:
  • Visual appeal and simplicity
  • Teaching effectiveness
  • Ease of navigation
  • Level of student engagement
Fall 2007: VLLS will be beta-tested in several Cleveland-area public schools. Seven local school districts have already expressed interest in helping to shape VLLS features and functionality.
Oct. 2007
Forward:
VLLS will catalog and standardize the Monarch Model and its associated visual resources to facilitate its potential for broad dissemination.
